Colombo: Zimbabwe delivered a strong statement in their final group fixture, defeating co-hosts Sri Lanka by six wickets at the R Premadasa Stadium. The win not only sealed their unbeaten run in the group stage but also underlined their growing confidence ahead of tougher contests.
At the innings break, Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer had quietly expressed belief that Sri Lanka’s 178 was within reach on a good batting surface. His assessment proved spot on.
Sri Lanka posted 178 for 7 in their 20 overs, built around a fluent 62 from Pathum Nissanka and a steady 44 by Pavan Rathnayake. However, Zimbabwe’s bowlers ensured the total never ran away from them. Cremer picked up 2 for 27 with his leg-spin, while Blessing Muzarabani chipped in with two crucial wickets.
In response, Zimbabwe approached the chase with composure and intent. The experienced Sikandar Raza once again rose to the occasion, smashing a rapid 45 off just 26 deliveries to seize control of the contest. His counterattack shifted the momentum firmly in Zimbabwe’s favour.

Opener Brian Bennett anchored the innings superbly, finishing unbeaten with 59 as Zimbabwe crossed the line with three balls remaining. Despite efforts from Dushan Hemantha and Dasun Shanaka, Sri Lanka were unable to halt the visitors’ charge.
With three wins from three matches, including a notable triumph over Australia earlier in the tournament, Zimbabwe head into the next phase brimming with belief. Their performance in Colombo sends a clear message that they are not just participants but genuine contenders.
