The Income Tax Department has once again reminded PAN card holders to ensure that their Permanent Account Number (PAN) is linked with Aadhaar before the final deadline of December 31, 2025. Failing to complete this mandatory process will make the PAN card inoperative, affecting several important financial and tax-related activities.

With the deadline approaching, taxpayers are being urged to verify their PAN–Aadhaar linking status and take corrective action if required.

How to Check PAN–Aadhaar Link Status Online

Checking whether your PAN is linked with Aadhaar is a simple online process:

  1. Visit the official Income Tax e-filing website
  2. Click on the option “Link Aadhaar Status”
  3. Enter your PAN number and Aadhaar number
  4. Submit the details to view the current linking status on the screen

This quick check helps confirm whether any further action is needed.

What to Do If PAN and Aadhaar Details Do Not Match

In some cases, PAN–Aadhaar linking may fail due to mismatched personal details such as name, date of birth, or gender. If this happens, taxpayers can resolve the issue by:

  • Updating Aadhaar details through the UIDAI portal
  • Correcting PAN details via Protean (NSDL) or UTIITSL
  • Visiting authorised PAN service centres for biometric verification, if required

Ensuring accurate details on both documents is essential for successful linking.

Consequences of Not Linking PAN with Aadhaar

If PAN is not linked with Aadhaar by December 31, 2025, the PAN card will become inoperative. An inoperative PAN cannot be used for:

  • Filing income tax returns
  • Opening bank accounts
  • High-value financial transactions
  • Any process where PAN is mandatory

This could cause significant inconvenience and delays for taxpayers.

PAN–Aadhaar Linking Deadline and Late Fee

The final deadline for PAN–Aadhaar linking is December 31, 2025. Taxpayers who have not linked their PAN yet must pay a late fee of ₹1,000 before completing the process.

The Income Tax Department advises taxpayers not to wait until the last moment and complete the linking process well in advance to avoid penalties and service disruptions.
