Pakistan sent a strong early message ahead of the T20 World Cup with a convincing six-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the opening T20I at Dambulla, stamping their authority in a series that doubles as a key warm-up for the global event.
Sri Lanka, who will co-host the World Cup with India, were kept on a tight leash after being asked to bat first. Pakistan’s bowling attack, led by a resurgent Shadab Khan, never allowed the hosts to build momentum. Making his return after shoulder surgery, Shadab made an immediate impact by striking twice in his very first over, setting the tone for a disciplined bowling performance. He finished with impressive figures and was well supported by Abrar Ahmed, who claimed three wickets, while left-arm pacer Salman Mirza cleaned up the lower order.
Restricted by regular wickets, Sri Lanka struggled to cross a competitive total and were eventually bowled out for 128. The innings lacked a solid partnership, something captain Dasun Shanaka later admitted hurt his side, especially after a brief recovery suggested a score closer to 150 was possible.
Pakistan’s chase was clinical from the outset. Opener Sahibzada Farhan took control early, reaching his half-century at a brisk pace and putting immediate pressure on the Sri Lankan bowlers. His fluent knock ensured there were no late jitters, as Pakistan cruised to the target with more than three overs to spare.
For Pakistan, the victory holds extra significance. With all their World Cup matches scheduled in Sri Lanka due to political constraints, adapting to local conditions is crucial. Shadab highlighted this after the match, noting that the series offers invaluable preparation on pitches similar to what they will face during the tournament.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, continue to search for stability following recent off-field upheavals, including leadership and selection changes. With little time before the World Cup, the hosts will be eager to regroup quickly ahead of the second T20I.
Pakistan’s dominant start has not only given them an early edge in the series but also underlined their readiness as serious contenders on the road to the T20 World Cup.
