India emerges as a key driver for AI adoption
OpenAI has officially launched its much-anticipated GPT-5 AI model, introducing groundbreaking improvements in accuracy, speed, reasoning, and mathematical problem-solving. Speaking at the global launch event, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlighted India’s rapid embrace of Artificial Intelligence, calling it the company’s second-largest market after the US — and potentially on track to become number one.
“India is our second-largest market in the world after the US, and it may well become our largest. The way Indian users and businesses are applying AI is truly remarkable,” Altman said during a media briefing. He added that OpenAI is collaborating with local partners to tailor AI solutions for India and make the technology more affordable and accessible. Altman also revealed plans to visit India in September to engage with innovators, startups, and policymakers.
GPT-5: A Giant Leap Toward AGI
Described as OpenAI’s “best model yet” for coding, automation, and agentic tasks, GPT-5 comes in three versions — gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano — allowing developers to balance performance, cost, and speed.
In the API, GPT-5 powers ChatGPT’s top-tier reasoning capabilities, while a separate gpt-5-chat-latest version caters to conversational use without extended reasoning. Altman called GPT-5 a “pretty significant step” toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), noting that it feels like interacting with a PhD-level expert on any subject.
For the first time, GPT-5 will be available to free-tier users, making advanced AI capabilities more accessible to the global community.
