Residents across Kolkata and nearby areas experienced sudden tremors on Friday afternoon after a 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh. The quake’s epicentre was located south-west of the BMD Seismic Centre in Agargaon, Dhaka, according to officials who confirmed the details to ANI. The tremors were brief but strong enough to be felt across several parts of the city, triggering concern among residents.
Panic in High-Rises and Marketplaces
People in high-rise apartments, office buildings and busy marketplaces reported ceiling fans swaying, furniture shaking and windows rattling. The movement was particularly noticeable in multi-storey structures, prompting many to step outside as a precaution. Videos shared online showed residents leaving homes and workplaces shortly after the tremors were felt. Several people also posted screenshots of earthquake alerts received on their mobile phones.
Authorities have not reported any casualties or significant damage so far.
Earlier Tremors This Month
This is the second time in February that Kolkata has experienced noticeable seismic activity. On February 3, tremors were felt following a 6.1 magnitude earthquake that originated in Myanmar, according to officials from the India Meteorological Department. An official had then stated that the epicentre was located in Myanmar and that details were being assessed to determine its exact position.
