Kargil Vijay Diwas 2025

New Delhi, July 26, 2025 – India today observes the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas, remembering the valor and sacrifices of Indian soldiers who fought bravely during the Kargil War of 1999. The day is marked as a symbol of courage, patriotism, and supreme sacrifice made by the Indian armed forces to protect the sovereignty of the nation.

President and Army Chief Lead Tributes

President Droupadi Murmu and Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande paid floral tributes at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh. The solemn ceremony was attended by top defense officials, war veterans, and families of martyrs. The President lauded the unwavering spirit of the armed forces, calling them “the pride of the nation.”

What Happened in 1999: The Story of Operation Vijay

In May 1999, Pakistani intruders, disguised as militants, illegally occupied Indian positions in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army launched Operation Vijay, a high-altitude warfare mission to reclaim these strategic peaks. After over two months of fierce fighting, the operation ended in a decisive victory for India on July 26, 1999.

More than 500 Indian soldiers sacrificed their lives, and hundreds were injured during the war. Their bravery in the harshest conditions—sub-zero temperatures, steep climbs, and enemy fire—continues to inspire generations.

Tributes Across the Nation

Ceremonies were held across India, including at war memorials in Delhi, Lucknow, Pune, and Bengaluru. Schools, colleges, and government institutions conducted special programs to spread awareness about the Kargil War and its heroes.

Veterans and citizens took to social media platforms with heartfelt messages and tributes, using hashtags like #KargilVijayDiwas, #OperationVijay, and #JaiHind.

Remembering the Heroes

Some of the most remembered heroes of the war include:

  • Captain Vikram Batra (PVC) – “Yeh Dil Maange More” became a symbol of fearless spirit.
  • Rifleman Sanjay Kumar (PVC) – Known for his heroic solo assault under heavy enemy fire.
  • Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav (PVC) – Scaled steep cliffs under enemy fire and captured bunkers.

Their acts of bravery are now part of India’s military folklore.

Youth Participation and National Pride

The Ministry of Defence, in collaboration with NCC and schools, has launched awareness drives and digital campaigns. Youths are encouraged to read stories of Kargil heroes and understand the values of unity, discipline, and selfless service.

Conclusion:
Kargil Vijay Diwas is not just a day of remembrance—it’s a day of national pride. As India stands united in saluting its brave soldiers, the spirit of “Service Before Self” continues to echo in every heart.
