Kolkata: Veteran Bengali actor and former politician Joy Banerjee died on Monday, August 25, at the age of 62. He had battled chronic respiratory illness and diabetes for several years. Doctors admitted him to a private hospital in Kolkata on August 15 when his condition worsened.
Banerjee left the hospital briefly but returned after his health declined again. Doctors put him on a ventilator on August 17. He died at 11:35 a.m. despite their efforts to save him.
A Career in Films and Politics
Born on May 25, 1963, Joy Banerjee began his acting career in 1982 with Aparupa alongside Debashree Roy. He quickly became a popular name in Bengali cinema with hits like Hirak Jayanti, Milan Tithi, and Chopper. His performance in Chopper earned particular praise from audiences.
In 2014, Banerjee entered politics. He joined a major party and contested in the West Bengal Assembly elections. He stayed active in politics until 2021, when he resigned and announced he would no longer represent any party.
Personal Life and Tributes
Banerjee married Trinamool Congress Councillor Ananya Banerjee, though the marriage later ended. During his illness, many political leaders visited him in the hospital.
