England finally had a moment to celebrate at the Melbourne Cricket Ground as fast bowler Josh Tongue delivered a historic performance on Boxing Day during the fourth Ashes Test. Tongue’s fiery spell produced England’s first five-wicket haul at the MCG in a Test match since 1998, halting Australia inside two sessions on the opening day.

With the Ashes already out of reach and England carrying a long winless streak in Australia, Tongue bowled with aggression and purpose. His performance stood out in a series dominated by the hosts, marking a rare bright spot for England on Australian soil, where they last won a Test series back in 2010–11.

Australia’s innings never gained momentum. Gus Atkinson struck early by removing Travis Head cheaply, before Tongue unleashed a devastating middle-order assault. He dismissed Jake Weatherald, Steve Smith, and Marnus Labuschagne in quick succession, leaving Australia reeling before drinks. Smith, in particular, continued to struggle against Tongue, falling for single digits once again.

At lunch, Australia were already deep in trouble, and despite a brief recovery led by Cameron Green and Michael Neser, England maintained pressure. A sharp run-out broke the partnership and opened the door for Tongue to complete his five-wicket haul, cleaning up the tail as Australia were bowled out for 152 in just over 45 overs.
