Mohali, Punjab: The Punjabi film industry lost one of its brightest stars as actor and comedian Jaswinder Bhalla passed away on Friday morning at a private hospital in Mohali. He was 65.
Family sources confirmed that Bhalla had been admitted a few days earlier after his health deteriorated. Despite medical care, he breathed his last early on August 22, leaving fans and fellow actors shocked and heartbroken.
From Professor to Comedy Icon
Born on May 4, 1960, in Ludhiana, Jaswinder Bhalla wasn’t just a celebrated actor but also a respected academic. After completing his Ph.D. in Extension Education, he joined Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) and later became the head of the Extension Education Department before retiring in 2020.
While teaching, Bhalla discovered his passion for comedy. In 1988, he released Chhankata 88 along with friend Bal Mukund Sharma. This audio cassette series became a cultural sensation in Punjab and marked the beginning of Bhalla’s journey in entertainment.

Over the years, Jaswinder Bhalla became a household name in Punjabi cinema. He made his acting debut in Dulla Bhatti and later featured in several blockbusters such as Mahaul Theek Hai, Jatt & Juliet, Jatt Airways, and the widely loved Carry on Jatta series, where his portrayal of Advocate Dhillon left audiences in splits.
His comic timing, relatable characters, and humorous dialogues made him a favorite among generations of moviegoers.
