Heavy rain battered Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, August 26, 2025. Landslips and flash floods hit many districts. Thirteen people died, including nine Vaishno Devi pilgrims. The slide struck near Adhkwari around 3 p.m. Rocks and boulders rushed down the slope without warning.
Authorities halted the pilgrimage and cleared the route. Army teams and local responders launched rescue work. Operations continued through the evening.
The government closed schools and most offices. Essential services and police stayed open. The Met office forecast very heavy rain for the next 40 hours. Water levels in the Tawi, Basantar, and Chenab are at the alert mark. People should avoid riverbanks and low-lying areas.
Floods damaged bridges, roads, and homes. Officials shut the Jammu to Srinagar and Kishtwar to Doda highways. Landslips blocked dozens of hilly roads. Earlier, floods killed three people in separate incidents. Submerged lanes and colonies slowed traffic across Jammu city.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called the situation serious. He is flying from Srinagar to Jammu to direct relief. With more rain coming, officials urged residents to stay indoors. Avoid nonessential travel and follow weather updates.
