The Election Commission of India finally released the first supplementary electoral roll for West Bengal late Monday night, after multiple delays kept voters waiting throughout the day. The list, containing around 29 lakh names, was uploaded just before midnight.
Delay Creates Confusion Among Voters
The release of the list saw repeated deadline revisions, leading to uncertainty among voters whose names were under scrutiny. Earlier in the day, officials were unable to confirm how many applications had been approved or rejected. West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal stated that the data was being processed centrally, which contributed to the delay.
Massive Verification Exercise
The supplementary list is part of a large-scale verification drive where nearly 60 lakh voter entries were placed under review. Around 705 judicial officers were assigned to examine documents and determine the eligibility of voters. Out of these, approximately 29 lakh cases were cleared in the first phase.
Approved entries have been marked as “Name Addition,” while rejected ones are listed under “Name Deletion” in the updated roll.
Where to Check the List
Voters can access the supplementary list through official platforms, including the Election Commission’s website and the state CEO portal. Physical copies will also be made available at district offices and polling stations.
Legal Oversight and Next Steps
The process follows directions from the Supreme Court of India, which had earlier ordered the publication of updated voter lists. The matter is scheduled for further hearing soon. To handle disputes, authorities have set up 19 appellate tribunals led by former high court judges. However, these tribunals are yet to become fully operational as infrastructure arrangements are still in progress.
More Lists Expected Soon
Officials confirmed that additional supplementary lists will be released in phases, with the next updates expected later this week and early next month.
