Amid rising tensions in West Asia, Amit Shah is heading an informal Group of Ministers (GoM) formed to address key strategic challenges impacting India, particularly in energy and fertiliser supply.
Focus on Energy and Fertiliser Security
The high-level group is closely monitoring disruptions in the supply of cooking gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG), both of which are crucial for domestic consumption and fertiliser production. Shah recently chaired a meeting with senior ministers, including JP Nadda and S Jaishankar, to assess the current situation and evaluate contingency plans.
Parallel Group Tackling Energy Supply
In addition, another informal GoM led by Manohar Lal Khattar has been tasked with addressing broader energy-related concerns. This group has already held discussions on maintaining uninterrupted supply of piped natural gas (PNG) to households. The meeting included key ministers such as Pralhad Joshi, H D Kumaraswamy, and Hardeep Singh Puri. The discussions are part of the government’s ongoing push to expand PNG usage as a cleaner alternative to LPG in urban areas.
Coordinated Government Approach
The formation of these groups follows directives from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has emphasized a coordinated, whole-of-government strategy to handle the evolving crisis. The Prime Minister has also approved the creation of multiple empowered groups of secretaries to address sector-specific challenges arising from the geopolitical situation.

What Lies Ahead
Officials indicate that these groups are expected to outline a clearer strategy in the coming days as India works to secure energy supplies and stabilise essential sectors amid global uncertainty. With the situation in West Asia remaining volatile, the government is focusing on preparedness and quick response to minimise any impact on the domestic economy.
