Rajasthan Royals Sold for $1.63 Billion to US-Led Consortium

Rajasthan Royals sale

The Rajasthan Royals franchise has been acquired by a global investment group led by US-based entrepreneur Kal Somani in a landmark deal valued at $1.63 billion (around ₹15,240 crore). The ownership transition is expected to take effect after IPL 2026.

Massive Growth in Franchise Value

The deal highlights the remarkable growth of the Indian Premier League over the years. When the franchise was first purchased in 2008 by a group led by Manoj Badale, it was valued at just $67 million. Over nearly two decades, the team’s valuation has increased more than 20 times in dollar terms and over 50 times in rupee terms, underlining the IPL’s rise as one of the world’s most valuable sporting leagues.

Strong Global Backing

The new ownership group includes prominent global investors, including Rob Walton, owner of the Denver Broncos, and Sheila Ford Hamp, who owns the Detroit Lions. Their involvement reflects growing international interest in the IPL, as global sports investors continue to expand their footprint in cricket.

Confidence in IPL’s Future

Kal Somani has been associated with the franchise since 2021 and has consistently expressed confidence in the league’s long-term growth. His latest acquisition reinforces that belief, as the IPL continues to attract global capital and audiences.

Royals’ Journey So Far

The Rajasthan Royals were among the original teams in the inaugural IPL season in 2008. Under the leadership of Shane Warne, the team famously won the first-ever IPL title, a moment still celebrated by fans. Over the years, the franchise has seen multiple ownership changes and investments. In 2021, investors increased their stake significantly, while global investment firm RedBird Capital also acquired a minority share.

A New Chapter Begins

The latest deal marks a significant milestone not just for the franchise but for the IPL ecosystem as a whole. With strong international backing and rising valuations, the Rajasthan Royals are set to enter a new phase of growth and global relevance.
