In a major escalation of tensions in the Middle East, Iran’s top security official Ali Larijani was killed in a targeted strike at a residence in the Pardis region, according to Iranian state media.
The attack reportedly took place at his daughter’s home and also claimed the lives of several others, including members of his security detail and close associates. Iranian authorities have described Larijani as a key architect of the nation’s defence strategy and honoured him as a martyr.
A Key Figure in Iran’s Security Leadership
At 68, Larijani held a central role in shaping Iran’s military and regional policies. Following the death of Ali Khamenei, he had become one of the most influential figures in the country’s security framework, overseeing strategic operations and internal defence planning. His death marks a significant blow to Iran’s leadership at a time when tensions in the region are already at a critical level.
Conflict Intensifies Across the Region
The strike comes amid growing hostilities involving Iran, Israel and the United States. In response, Iran launched a series of missile and drone attacks targeting Israeli territory and locations across Gulf nations. The United States has also carried out airstrikes on Iranian missile installations near the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global oil route. These strikes reportedly targeted fortified military sites considered threats to international shipping.
Israel Confirms Targeted Operation
Israeli authorities confirmed their involvement in the strike, stating that it aimed to weaken Iran’s strategic leadership. The operation also reportedly killed Gholam Reza Soleimani, who led the Basij paramilitary force. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s stance on countering Iranian influence in the region, while Defence Minister Israel Katz said multiple paramilitary positions in Tehran were also targeted.
Military officials indicated that the broader strategy includes pressuring Iran’s leadership structure, including figures linked to Mojtaba Khamenei.
Rising Regional Impact
The situation has quickly spread beyond Iran. Missile attacks near Tel Aviv resulted in civilian casualties, while air defence systems in Dubai intercepted incoming threats. The conflict has also affected global markets, particularly oil prices, as the Strait of Hormuz remains under heightened risk. Iran has signalled it will maintain control over this critical passage, raising concerns about potential disruptions to global energy supply.

The broader conflict continues to take a heavy toll. Strikes linked to the ongoing war have displaced large populations in neighbouring regions such as Lebanon, where civilians face worsening conditions. Casualty figures continue to rise across multiple countries, underlining the expanding scale of the crisis.
