Cross-Voting Boosts NDA in Rajya Sabha Elections Across States

cross voting NDA

The latest Rajya Sabha elections witnessed unexpected political twists as cross-voting and absentee lawmakers significantly impacted results in key states, giving an advantage to the National Democratic Alliance while exposing cracks within opposition ranks.

Setback for Opposition in Bihar

In Bihar, the opposition alliance suffered a major blow after failing to secure a crucial seat. The candidate from the Rashtriya Janata Dal, Amarendra Dhari Singh, lost the contest due to the absence of four legislators, including members from both the Indian National Congress and his own party. The absence proved costly, as the opposition candidate fell short of the required votes despite being close to the winning mark.

Meanwhile, the NDA delivered a strong performance, winning all five available seats. Key winners included Nitish Kumar, Nitin Nabin, Ram Nath Thakur, Upendra Kushwaha and Shivesh Kumar, with full support from alliance legislators and no signs of cross-voting within their ranks.

Odisha Sees Surprise Outcome

In Odisha, cross-voting played a decisive role in reshaping the election outcome. Several legislators from the Biju Janata Dal and Congress voted unexpectedly, helping BJP-backed Independent candidate Dilip Ray secure a crucial Rajya Sabha seat. This result disrupted the expected calculations of opposition parties, which had aligned their numbers to secure multiple seats. BJP candidates Manmohan Samal and Sujeet Kumar also registered comfortable victories, while BJD’s Santrupt Misra managed to win as well.

The outcome triggered a sharp political exchange, with former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik accusing the BJP of influencing legislators, a claim strongly rejected by current Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

Haryana Result Hangs in Balance

The situation in Haryana remains uncertain as disputes over voting procedures delayed the final outcome. Both the BJP and Congress have approached the Election Commission of India with complaints regarding ballot handling and secrecy. With two legislators from the Indian National Lok Dal abstaining, the contest has become even more complex. The final decision is now pending, awaiting a ruling from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Political Implications

The results underline the ongoing challenges faced by opposition alliances in maintaining unity, while the NDA continues to demonstrate strong coordination among its members. Cross-voting incidents, especially in Odisha, highlight shifting political dynamics and could have a lasting impact on future electoral strategies across states.

As the dust settles, these developments are likely to influence upcoming elections and reshape political alignments in the months ahead.
