The upcoming assembly elections scheduled for April will serve as a crucial political test for the Bharatiya Janata Party as it attempts to expand its influence in regions where it has historically struggled to secure power.
Following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the party maintained strong political momentum across several states. However, the next round of state polls will determine whether it can build on that success and gain ground in areas traditionally dominated by regional parties.
Polls to Reflect Public Mood
The election announcement comes at a time when opposition parties have intensified their criticism of the government led by Narendra Modi. Key issues raised include the trade agreement with the United States, energy concerns linked to the West Asian crisis, and debates around the revision of electoral rolls.
Political observers believe the elections could provide an early indication of public sentiment toward the central government.
BJP Confident in Assam, Hopeful Elsewhere
The BJP enters the polls with confidence in Assam, where it has been in power since 2016. The party is also focusing on expanding its reach in states such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala and West Bengal, where it has yet to form a government.
Regional parties remain strong competitors in these states. In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee continues to lead the All India Trinamool Congress, while in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin heads the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government.
Alliances and Electoral Strategies
Apart from Assam, West Bengal remains the most important battleground for the BJP. The party is positioning itself as the main challenger to the ruling Trinamool Congress.
In Tamil Nadu, the BJP is working alongside the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to challenge the DMK-led alliance.
Meanwhile, in Kerala, the political contest traditionally revolves around the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front and the Indian National Congress-led United Democratic Front. However, the BJP’s growing vote share in recent elections has made it an emerging factor in the state’s political dynamics.
Modi Leads BJP’s Campaign Push
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been actively campaigning in the poll-bound states, combining the launch of development projects with political rallies. His recent rally in Kolkata highlighted the importance the party places on West Bengal in the upcoming elections.
The BJP is also focusing on issues such as border security and alleged infiltration from Bangladesh, particularly in Assam. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, these themes have become central to the party’s campaign in the northeastern state.

Key Battle Ahead
Despite facing strong regional leadership in several states, the BJP believes its consistent vote share growth in places like West Bengal gives it a solid foundation for future expansion.
The April elections will therefore play an important role in shaping the political landscape ahead of future national contests and will reveal whether the BJP can break into territories that have so far resisted its electoral advances.
