Rain Brings Relief to Delhi as Thunderstorms Expected, Temperatures Set to Fall

New Delhi witnessed light rainfall in several areas on Friday as weather conditions shifted due to an active western disturbance. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city is likely to see additional spells of rain through the day, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 kmph.

The rainfall comes after an unusually warm Thursday, when Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 27.1°C. This marked the warmest January day the city has experienced in the last seven years, with temperatures hovering nearly seven degrees above the seasonal average. Weather officials attributed the sudden warmth to clear skies and persistent easterly winds, which typically carry more heat during winter months.

With cloud cover increasing and rain activity picking up, a noticeable dip in temperatures is expected. The IMD has forecast the maximum temperature to settle between 18°C and 20°C on Friday, followed by a further drop to around 16°C to 18°C on Saturday.

The changing weather is also expected to offer some relief from pollution levels. Authorities said Delhi’s air quality index is likely to improve, falling into the ‘poor’ category on Friday and possibly reaching ‘moderate’ levels by Saturday if rain persists as predicted.

A yellow alert has been issued across the city, warning residents of intermittent rain and unstable weather conditions. Officials have advised people to remain cautious, particularly during afternoon and evening hours, when another round of light rainfall and localized thunderstorms is likely.
