Jaipur: Domestic cricket rarely grabs headlines these days, especially in cities where excitement usually peaks only during the IPL or international fixtures. But that is about to change in Jaipur as the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025–26 kicks off, bringing with it a major attraction for local fans.

The Sawai Mansingh Stadium will host Elite Group C matches, and Mumbai’s opening games are already creating a stir. Former India captain Rohit Sharma is expected to feature in Mumbai’s first two fixtures against Sikkim on December 24 and Uttarakhand on December 26. His presence alone has turned a routine domestic tournament into a much-anticipated event.

Rohit’s return to domestic cricket comes after the BCCI issued a directive requiring centrally contracted players to play at least two Vijay Hazare Trophy matches when available. The move is aimed at keeping players match-ready ahead of upcoming international assignments, while also adding star value to India’s domestic competitions.

For Jaipur’s cricket lovers, this is a rare chance to watch one of the country’s biggest names outside an IPL or international setting. Officials expect significantly higher attendance than usual, with Rohit’s popularity likely to draw crowds that domestic games seldom see.

With increased fan interest, security has become a key focus area. The Rajasthan Cricket Association has tightened arrangements following crowd-management concerns during a Ranji Trophy match last month.

Ad hoc convener Deendayal Kumawat confirmed that extensive measures are in place. Police deployment, along with private security personnel, has been finalised in coordination with senior officials. Stadium readiness has also been prioritised to ensure a smooth experience for spectators.

The SMS Stadium has undergone a cleanup drive, with overgrown vegetation cleared and basic facilities upgraded. Free drinking water will be available, and the North and East stands will be opened initially, with additional seating ready if turnout exceeds expectations.

As the Vijay Hazare Trophy gets underway, Jaipur is set to witness a rare domestic cricket spectacle, one made special by Rohit Sharma’s return to the local stage.
