A tragic train collision near Bilaspur station in Chhattisgarh has left 11 people dead after a passenger train rammed into a goods train. According to the Railway Board, initial findings suggest that the accident occurred because the passenger train crossed a red signal. The families of the deceased will receive compensation of ₹10 lakh each, while rescue and investigation operations are underway.

The accident took place around 4 PM when a DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) train traveling from Gevra in Korba district to Bilaspur collided from behind with a stationary goods train between Gatora and Bilaspur stations.

In an official statement, the Railway Board said:

“According to preliminary assessments, the DEMU train appears to have passed a danger signal, leading to the unfortunate accident.”

The statement further added that rescue and relief operations began immediately on a war footing. “Railway authorities are providing all possible assistance to the affected passengers and their families. District officials and medical teams are working in close coordination to ensure timely relief efforts,” the Board said.

Compensation Announced

The Railway Board confirmed financial assistance for victims: ₹10 lakh for families of the deceased, ₹5 lakh for those seriously injured, and ₹1 lakh for passengers with minor injuries.

A detailed inquiry will be conducted by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) to determine the exact cause of the collision and recommend corrective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
