IndiGo Issues Travel Advisory as Heavy Rains Lash Mumbai, Warns of Flight Delays

IndiGo travel advisory

Mumbai, August 20, 2025 – Mumbai continues to battle relentless monsoon showers, causing disruptions across the city and at its busy airport. In response, IndiGo Airlines has issued a travel advisory, urging passengers to plan ahead, check flight status before leaving home, and allow extra time for commuting amid waterlogging and traffic snarls.

The airline said heavy rains could trigger air traffic congestion and impact smooth flight operations. “While we want your journey to be hassle-free, Mother Nature has her own plans. We recommend allowing more time for airport travel and keeping your contact details updated for schedule notifications,” IndiGo stated.

Flight Operations Hit by Rain Fury

On Tuesday, Mumbai airport witnessed 11 flight diversions and at least 24 go-arounds due to poor visibility and waterlogged runways. Many evening flights were delayed by more than an hour, leaving passengers stranded.

The cascading delays rippled across other cities as well. Meanwhile, auto and taxi refusals left travelers scrambling for options, while power outages were reported in Kurla, Andheri, Kandivli, and Mira Road, further compounding commuter woes.

Record Rainfall in August

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai has recorded 891 mm of rainfall in August so far, making it the wettest August in five years. The city’s seasonal total has crossed 2,193.2 mm, already exceeding the annual average.

In just the last five days, Mumbai received 837.3 mm of rainfall, surpassing totals for June and even July, traditionally the wettest month. Some localities, such as Chincholi in Malad, reported an astounding 361 mm in 24 hours.

Warnings and Precautions

  • Mumbai: Under Orange Alert till Wednesday for heavy to very heavy rainfall.
  • Pune Ghats & MMR: High risk of landslides and flash floods.
  • Coastal Areas: Fishermen advised against venturing into the sea due to rough conditions.

The IMD has suggested partial relief from Thursday with a Yellow Alert, but commuters and residents are advised to stay cautious, avoid waterlogged zones, and plan journeys wisely.
