The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded fresh rainfall alerts across Maharashtra, with Mumbai, Pune, and adjoining districts bracing for heavy showers as the monsoon strengthens.

Mumbai on Orange Alert

Mumbai is currently under an orange alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas through August 19. The IMD cautioned that intense, short-duration downpours may trigger waterlogging, flooding in low-lying areas, and severe traffic disruptions.

In the last 24 hours, several parts of the city reported significant rainfall — Charkop (190 mm), Anand Nagar (188 mm), Borivali (168 mm), Powai, and Colaba leading the tally. The persistent showers have already slowed down road and rail movement, while authorities have urged residents to avoid flooded stretches and plan their travel carefully.

Coastal belts also remain under watch with warnings of rough sea conditions. Fishermen have been strictly advised to stay away from the Arabian Sea until further notice.

Pune Ghats Under Red Alert

While Pune city saw only light to moderate rainfall (Lavale – 8 mm), the surrounding ghat regions are on red alert. The IMD has predicted extremely heavy precipitation, heightening risks of landslides, flash floods, and dam overflows.

Some ghat areas have already reported intense rainfall:

• Tamhini – 210 mm
• Koyna Navja – 174 mm
• Ambone – 115 mm

The Temghar dam is now 95% full, and authorities have issued alerts for downstream villages and low-lying settlements.

Other Districts at Risk

The rainfall warnings extend beyond Mumbai and Pune. Districts like Nashik, Satara, Kolhapur, Sangli, and Ahmednagar are likely to see heavy rainfall, while Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg remain under repeated red alerts for extremely heavy showers. Palghar and Thane too face risks of flooding.

• Mumbai commuters: Expect prolonged traffic jams and waterlogging. Leave early if traveling to the airport or major junctions.
• Ghat residents in Pune: Avoid risky hill roads and be cautious of landslide-prone areas.
