In a major relief for private vehicle owners, the Indian government is rolling out a FASTag-based annual toll pass that allows 200 trips on national highways for just ₹3,000 per year. This landmark initiative, announced by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, aims to curb rising toll expenses and streamline travel for millions.
The new annual pass will officially go live on August 15, 2025, and is applicable exclusively to non-commercial vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans. It will remain valid for either 12 months or 200 trips, whichever comes first.
“This step addresses long-standing concerns over rising toll costs. With the new pass, the average toll fee per trip could drop from ₹50–₹100 to just ₹15,” said Mr. Gadkari in a video statement shared on X (formerly Twitter).
Huge Savings for Frequent Travelers
Currently, 200 trips through toll plazas cost approximately ₹10,000. With this new plan, the expense will drop to ₹3,000, offering nearly 70% in savings for regular commuters and highway users.
To make the process seamless, the Rajmarg Yatra mobile app, along with the official NHAI and MoRTH websites, will provide activation and renewal options for users.
How It Works
- Point-to-point toll booths: Each crossing is counted as a single trip.
- Closed tolling systems (e.g., expressways): One entry and exit together will be considered one trip.
The government has amended Rule 9 of the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, to legally implement this scheme.
Reducing Congestion, Boosting Convenience
According to the Ministry’s statement, the annual pass will help:
- Reduce toll booth wait times
- Ease traffic congestion
- Simplify toll collection with one upfront payment
- Minimize disputes at toll plazas
- Address toll plaza saturation within 60 km stretches
“The policy is designed to bring both relief and efficiency to our highways,” the Ministry stated. “It’s about affordability, accessibility, and a smoother travel experience.”
