5.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Assam, Tremors Felt in Morigaon

A moderate earthquake rattled parts of Assam in the early hours of Monday, briefly unsettling residents but causing no reported damage or injuries.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the quake registered a magnitude of 5.1 and struck at around 4:17 am. The epicentre was traced to the Morigaon region in central Assam, with the tremors originating from a depth of about 50 kilometres beneath the surface.

People in and around Morigaon, along with nearby districts, said they felt light to moderate shaking, prompting some to step outdoors as a precaution. Despite the early-morning jolt, officials confirmed that there were no immediate reports of harm to life or property.

Local authorities remain alert and are keeping a close watch on the situation. Assam, which lies in a seismically active zone, experiences earthquakes from time to time, and disaster management teams are prepared to respond if needed. For now, the situation is under control, and normal life has continued without disruption.
